The Invisible Wall, a new book by Jim Underwood

Dr. Jim Underwood recently wrote a book about the execution of corporate strategy called The Invisible Wall.

The Invisible Wall is a story about two companies.  One is failing and the other is growing.  As you take your seat as an observer, you get to watch an outside team try to help both companies…and in the process, they discover the keys to creating an organization that is designed to succeed.

I’m proud to be part of this journey and it was the first time in long time that I participated in a book from notion to publication.  The book is extraordinary and is perfect as a guide for long term strategic execution, turn-around management, and as a companion to any human resource orientation guide.

I created the website for The Invisible Wall using the Genesis framework theme and WP-E-Commerce shopping cart.  The Genesis framework is super easy to work with and the Instinctz plugin integrated with USPS Shipping like a dream.  I’ll post a tutorial on the integration in the future.

I have a lot of work to do on the colors and some of the presentation needs work but it has been a fantastic journey.

Did somebody actually tell you to take that shot? Yes…

I’ve recently re-entered the basketball court. I’m old, compared to the usual crew on a court but I did make 5 of 6 freethrows with my eyes closed.  Some muscle memory just never goes away.  Hey, it’s not a useful skill but I did make 14 of 15 with my eyes open.
That brings me to my one of my first points: you never actually get to shoot freethrows if you are not fouled while shooting during a game.  I happen to be the best assist man I know.  Call it ego, but there is a downside, the top assist guy also has the most turnovers.
Second point: I’ve seen some absurd shots lately.  I’ve seen triple coverage, layups with 4 guys guarding the lane, shots from out of the zip code, and still – the ball goes in the air.  Worse, there is no follow the ball.  Quick tip: when you shoot the ball, statistically, you wont’ make it unless you’re Kobe or Michael – the other one. Following up will also increase your rebound number.
It makes me wonder, did somebody tell them to take that shot?
Yes.
It’s probably in the Rich Man’s guide to raising kids: Tell them to shoot if they have the ball.  At first kids don’t want to shoot the ball.  It is much easier to hand it off than to take the shot.  Tyranical fathers (or mothers) are pretty obsessed with the succes of a child in the seasonal sport.  Don’t take the shot and the child gets a “beat down” so it doesn’t happen again.  Pretty soon, the kid stars making the shots 10 percent of the time.  I’ve seen kids make 1 basket and miss until number 16 of 20.  At that rate, they’ll shoot 30 more from anywhere on the court.  They point is that one minor win will result in endless chances to win in endless games of horse, 21, 25, or in full court games.  Each time the player has the ball, one thing enters the mind – Score.  Score from anywhere.
Think this translates to business?  It does.  I have gone to two different schools and program levels, undergraduate and MBA.  During that time I’ve seen the best students and minds of two generations and I’ve seen the kids who learned that they have to shoot the ball.  The best example is the guy who says, “I’m starting a t-shirt business today that will give profits to the company and donate a portion of the contributions to charity” and then does exactly that.
Sure, it’s not exactly an enterprise that will take over the t-shirt business but there was no question as to whether or not he’d shoot the ball.  He’s paying the bills while entertaining himself with community theatre taking lead roles.
Other people in my classes and on the court have built empires because not only did they shoot the ball, they seeked it out before getting the chance to shoot it.  Failure or hesitation is not in their vocabulary.
The shooter is infectious: once teammates see the points going up, teammates take notice.  The assist man starts spreading the ball around and instead of expecting 3 passes before a shot, 1 pass is made.  The original shooter is now the leader.  Action and followers.
I’ve seen the deterioration of a team happen in the same exact way.  The instant the shooter decides to hesitate and pass the ball, the forward passes up on layups, the point passes on a three pointer, and nobody follows the shot.  Followers will instinctively help a leader squander a substantial black bottom line and right into a loss by 9 points.  Sorry for the mixed metaphors, but that seems to be my point.  That some children are inclined to execute because they are told to from a very early age.  Learn to execute early, practice OFTEN (see the aforementioned 30 shots to make 3), practice a little bit more and of course make it all about something you love.

StudioPress

I really, REALLY want to use the StudioPress themes on this site but visually, they are centered around the Featured Content Gallery.  While I’m a person of few words, I’m one of even less pictures.  Does anybody have a StudioPress driven website that is not graphically driven?  Lemme know.

Producing in 2010, TRIZ and XCelsius

Time to get working!  Happy 2010 everybody.  I’ve started a few projects including my new ‘re’-interest in the Inventive Creative Process – TRIZ, and I’ve started using XCelsius, the SAP presentation tool for excel.  The results are stunning and I’ll post them soon.  The bascis are completed: full 78 variable lookup, 40 principle alignment and cross reference.  I just have to ‘pretty’ it up and I’ll bring TRIZ to michaelbradley.us.

XCelsius is a remarkable tool.  I’ve been working with it for a month or so and I’ve been forced to get REALLY creative with Excel.  Combine offset, index, match, and vlookups with XCelsius and almost any data is presentable in a fashionable dashboard.  I used to fancy myself a numbers guy but advanced matrix work, once reserved exclusively for databases, can be easily presented in this product.

Quick vote, by comments only: Are you interested in an XCelsius video series on this site?

PrestaShop introduces PrestaStore

Note: I am reposting this announcement because PrestaShop asked me to and I’m a big believer in their product. Read on and let me know your thoughts!

PrestaShop Software

As you may recall, PrestaShop is open-source e-commerce software that allows e-merchants to sell their products on the Internet thanks to its powerful tool-set. The company was founded in 2007 by Bruno Lévêque and Igor Schlumberger. The solution has been downloaded at a rate of more than 25,000 times per month, and 15,000 are currently in production.

PrestaShop software stands out by its ease-of-use and the number of features it proposes.

PrestaShop has just made its version 1.2 alpha available, which brings many new features to bear such as:

Improvements in statistics with tracking and affiliation options.

New mail-alert functions.

Client groups.

Improved search.

Advanced tag management.

Possibility of attaching files to products (PDF, images, etc.)

And many others … you can find the complete list here: http://www.prestashop.com/forums/viewthread/17495/news___releases/liste_complete_des_nouveautes_de_la_1_dot_2_alpha

But the biggest news is the upcoming unveiling of PrestaStore, which was introduced via the Back Office in version 1.2 of PrestaShop.

PrestaStore: the marketplace at PrestaShop

PrestaStore is the marketplace for all things PrestaShop. The Website will be the meeting point between contributors who will submit their work. Submissions will be of two sorts:

The first will be in the form of modules, which extend functionality around the heart of the PrestaShop code.

The second will be in the form of themes, which allow users to personalize the graphic appearance of their online stores.

Revving up in 3 speeds

The site’s launching will be done in 3 stages:

First, we will target contributors who could make their works available as soon as the site is opened.

Second, we will open the site only to those same contributors in order to have time to validate their work.

Finally, the Website will be open to the general public.

PrestaStore, the place of choice for improving PrestaShop

The goal of the project is essentially to centralize information that is currently disseminated. It is also to lend visibility to numerous people who work on our software.

We also hope to facilitate the personalisation of PrestaShop stores by e-Merchants.

Our PrestaStore platform will therefore be the preferred place in order to find all supplementary functionality based on PrestaShop code.

We have greatly simplified the process for obtaining modules; customers will simply go to PrestaStore and choose the category in which they hope to optimize their PrestaShop online store. At the launching, there will be 5 categories: price comparators, logistics, payment tracking & conversion, and themes. Later, we will widen the choice according to the creativity of the community! In order to obtain a product, one simply adds it to the shopping cart and validates the order. The customer will then receive an e-mail containing a link for downloading.

At launch, about 40 products will be proposed for our team. Big names such as Fia-Net, Shopping.com, kelkoo, Amazon, etc., will be present. Contributions by the community will then be added.

Contributions will help to (for example):

- Automate customer management

- Propose various payment services by responding to the needs of merchants and customers, regardless of their bank

- Improve product and promotional visibility of a shop within numerous price comparators.

Security is something we are very concerned about; all submissions will be verified by our staff before being put online on PrestaStore. We are going to introduce norms, as well as an auditing service of all submissions made.

Two goals for PrestaStore

PrestaStore is a risk undertaken by PrestaShop. Of course, we wish to continue to attract new users to our open-source software.

In addition, we hope to unite in one place those contributors who provide quality work based on our software.

On one side, PrestaStore users will therefore be contributors (programmers, graphic artists) who work as freelancers or for Web agencies, and on the other side, merchants who use PrestaShop.

2 sites are coming around

http://www.Freewordsofchrist.org is a work in progress but the Revolution Theme and some patience has brought us to about a week away of completion. The other site, www.zoomfmi.com/shop is less pretty but it has climbed in the search results ranks in short time. These are fun projects and I hope to continue working and tweaking them into full networks this year.

DC migrations

My current project involves moving application and infrastructure services from various locations in Texas to a consolidated Data Center in the Midwest.  Very cool project using VMWare, PlateSpin and some old fashioned server builds.

PlateSpin Product, part 2

I put a post up last week about a possible bug in PlateSpin.  Fortunately, I was wrong and the product was working as designed.  There are a few nuances about the product that need to be learned, with experience, but the product itself really can deliver as described.

However, I thought I had a bug and reported it on the blog.  You’ll never guess who called?  Yea, PlateSpin contacted me directly to address any concerns I had.  Shortly after, we worked together on a particular problem and some kinks have been worked out of our system.

That’s incredible though.  A rather random blog was posted about their product and PlateSpin contacted the author just as a matter of policy!  I haven’t heard anything like it actually.

If the software industry follows the PlateSpin customer service policies, then we have a wonderful future to look forward to.  Cheers!

Platespin & Dynamic Disks

I’m running into a problem with PowerConvert v. 7.x and Dynamic disks.  It appears that resizing a dynamic disk is not the same as resizing a regular disk.  There are default operations run on dynamic disks including actually ADDing 5% space instead of the proposed resize in the GUI.  More on this if I can confirm it – and save another headache.

LimeSurvey Install

A friend asked me to check out LimeSurvey as a viable option for an enterprise survey and customer service tool.  So… I checked it out.  The installation at my preferred hosting provider: www.sitesubmit.ca was a total breeze: FTP, Permissions check, DB Creation, Config file mods, Install.  My friend’s installation, however, was a bit more tricky.  I had to tweak the config for quite some time but we have a successful installation that will make life much easier for hundreds of survey takers under my friend’s guidance.

In short, check out www.limesurvey.org, install the product and make your donation – it’s worth every cent.
